Isn't everything Neil Gaiman writes magical? Well, I'm not sure about the Duran Duran biography he did but everything else is haunting, magical and humorous. The Sleeper and the Spindle is no exception. I was surprised that he managed to slip in a twist in such a short book but really that's just me selling the man short. The illustrations are gorgeous to go with the story. The cobweb strands of other fairy tales can be felt it the book but it certainly stands a part. When my son is a bit older I look forward to reading him this particular story. The heroine is pragmatic and brave with nary a hint of foolhardiness that seems to plague these hero types. Truly magical.

I chose this book for a reading challenge as a book based on a fairy tale. I recently read Ocean at the End of the Lane which I loved. This book, or short story more like was slow to engage me. The brief screens of action finally hooked me in and then it was over. Ok, not great.
Beautiful pictures, but the writing seems perfunctory. The only good thing about the story that it was a quick read, but no one in my book club liked it - the characters are flat and Gaiman, as he is known to do, seems to be writing with an agenda in mind.
This is a nice little book. It's extremely short and you can knock it out in about an hour. It's very Neil Gaiman-esque with the illustrations and tone. I really loved the artwork-- it was beautiful. However, I wish the story was longer and had better characterization. It's still a great concept and a fun read. I loved Gaiman's creepy take on Snow White/Sleeping Beauty. I'm not a huge fairytale fan, but I would have gladly read a 400 page, fleshed out version of this story.

For what it is, it's worth the read. It's also a lovely gift for a reader. I'm giving a copy to my boyfriend's mother for Christmas, for example. I wouldn't necessarily spend the money on it for myself (since it's very short), but it's so gorgeous that I would love to have a copy on my bookshelf.

3.5 out of 5 stars, but I rounded up because of the illustrations
Spoiler free!

Such a strange book. A strange start, a strange middle, a phenomenal (yet strange) end. The writing style is strange, the prose is unique, there are no names used at all. Strange is good; breaks us out of molds and all that. Basically, I loved every page of Sleeper!

So why only 4 stars? For the cost, this book is short. I finished this in about an hour and a half. For some, that's not worth the price of admission. If I hadn't received it for Christmas, I would have agreed. But hey, that's art!
This story reminded me of Sleeping Beauty only instead of telling us about the sleeping princess, we learn of what is going on in the world once the princess fell asleep and it's not all good.
There is a Queen who sets out on a quest to find out why parts of her land are disappearing. She sets out with a group of misfits, she is the strong woman who finds a way into the castle where not only the sleeping princess is, but an evil she must battle. Not a long story but found the view point of outside the castle while the princess slept interesting. It's a quick read and suitable for teens and adults.
So this book is an incredibly fast reader. Finished it in under an hour. But damn, it's definitely a unique spin-off. The story itself ventures off into the journey of Snow White. Her wedding is about to take place and a few of the dwarves set off to collect some items pertaining to her celebration. While in town they hear word of a curse spreading throughout the country that sets those sticking around into a deep sleep. Once coming back, they pass off their new knowledge to Snow and she decided postpone the wedding to find the source of the curse in hopes of defeating it before it spreads even further. So unlike your typical Snow White, she pretty much changed herself into a Joan of Arc type figure and sets off fearlessly. Won't give anymore details, but clearly the sleeping curse is where the Sleeping Beauty comes into play and let's just say things are rather unexpected. If this was a full blown out novel, I can only imagine the details and story progression they could have played with. Even so, it's set out like your typical fairy tale. But it is very dark. The illustrations are beyond beautiful and really they contributed to my liking of this. If you're into fairytales or into the macabre, you will not be disappointed. Truly unique!
I really enjoyed this twist on the stories of both Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Neil Gaiman's writing paired with Chris Riddell's art is once more a great pleasure. Unlike "Fortunately, the Milk," "The Wolves in the Walls," and "The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish" this will not be going on my son's bedtime bookshelf for some time. This story, despite it's length, is dark, matching it's much older source material. This volume will have a place of distinction on my shelf... along with all the other Neil Gaiman books I've fallen in love with (in particular, next to Neverwhere).
