Kleopatra Karen Essex Books
I read the second volume first and loved it, so I decided to buy Volume I. Volume II was a marvelous historic fiction (as was Volume I); however, Volume II covers Kleopatra's 20 year reign and is far more exciting than Volume I in which she grew from a child to a very young woman. Today, she would have been about 13 by the end of the volume. It was an important read, if as I am, you search for the history of the most powerful women leaders in the world. Volume I helps the reader understand what, in her youth, shaped her ability to become the greatest strategist of Egypt. One comes to understand why Egypt was, in many ways, more effective than the Rome of her day.Tags : Amazon.com: Kleopatra (9780446679176): Karen Essex: Books,Karen Essex,Kleopatra,Grand Central Publishing,0446679178,Historical,Biographical fiction,Cleopatra,Egypt - History - 332-30 B.C,Egypt;History;332-30 B.C.;Fiction.,Egypt;History;Fiction.,Queens,332-30 B.C.,Cleopatra,,Egypt,FICTION Historical General,Fiction,Fiction - Historical,Fiction-Historical,GENERAL,General Adult,Historical - General,Historical fiction,History,Queen of Egypt,,Royalty; Family relationships; Political intrigue; Power struggles; Succession; Alliances,d. 30 B.C.
Kleopatra Karen Essex Books Reviews
Kleopatra tells the story of Kleopatra VII’s earlier years. The story begins when Kleopatra is three years old and she cannot speak Greek. Over time, Kleopatra learns many languages. The story also tells Kleopatra’s life as a child who roam’s Alexandria’s streets. She is shown to be clever and has a respect for the Egyptian culture. She also learns Roman alliances as the only way to ensure her family’s dynasty. One day, Alexandria’s mob are furious with her father, and he runs away to Rome taking Kleopatra along with him. He learns that his wife, Kleopatra VI and his daughter, Berenice IV betrays him. Kleopatra and Ptolemy XII beseech the Romans to restore Ptolemy's rightful place to the throne.
I really like Kleopatra’s portrayal in this novel. She is a tomboy, and likes to dress up as a boy to mingle with her people. This book shows Kleopatra’s love for Egypt and its culture. She is also the cleverest person in her family. Her father greatly trusts her and in Rome, he often relies on her advice. She is also bold and often speaks her mind. However, she does have her flaws. She can be unforgiving to those who betray her. Still, she is compassionate to her people and wants to be a great queen.
Overall, Kleopatra is an in-depth psyche about how Kleopatra transforms herself from an insignificant princess to be the Queen of Egypt. It shows how her upbringing affects the decisions and the woman she becomes when she becomes pharaoh. Kleopatra learns from her father’s and sister's mistakes in how she can rule. I also thought that this novel does a great job in the characterization of the other supporting characters. They are very complex and we get to see the motives behind their actions. The only thing that I dislike about this novel was that it was very slow, and I was not really interested in the story until Kleopatra is in Rome. The part where Kleopatra and her father are in Rome was very fascinating. Despite its slow beginning, this was an excellent portrait of Kleopatra. This is a novel not to be missed by fans of Kleopatra. I recommend this novel to fans of Michelle Moran, Margaret George, and Stephanie Dray.
Interesting read
This is seriously the best book I have ever read. I am very interested/ familiar with Egyptian History especially during Kleopatra's time. This book is very well written and Essex transports you into Alexandria almost feeling the sea air blow and the city's wonderful smells. I very rarely reread books, but I've read this fabulous book at least 6 times.
Wonderful book anyone interested in ancient Eygpt will find it extremely
educational yet one must remember that this is historical fiction.
I'm a huge Cleopatra fan, but this book struggles to capture the reader.
I loved this book. It recorded my rating incorrectly. This was a retread for me! It's that good!!! 5 stars please'
This got off to a rough start, with Kleopatra as petulant three year old that cannot speak and a few months later expressing herself in the most mature speach, and ending with her as a young woman about to meet Cesar. The book focuses a lot on Berenike, her like sister and I found myself more interested in her than the book's heroine. One thing that ruins the story in places is the constant unflattering descriptions of the king, Kleopatra's father. He is always described at fat or waddling and at one point, the novel has him neighing and whinnying like a horse.. and this is the king of Egypt? Very odd behavior for a king and the Romans are not painted in much better of a light. Clodius, a very powerful Roman, actually does a little hopping dance after telling of a plot to kill a shipfull of people. Except for these very odd quirks, the novel was not bad. I like the way it focuses on Egypt and Cleopatra and keeps the Romans and their going ons to a minimum.
