ORIGINAL REVIEW: 3.5 stars -- Ah cliffhangers...at least the next book is out, otherwise that would have made me round down to 3 stars. I really hate cliffhangers. Just a personal thing. This was a waffle one for me....I really had a hard time b/c I really loved Mari and Trystan...but it felt like not a lot happened and things just went back and forth with no forward progress... In the end I love these 2 enough to get over it, but I'm hoping more happens in the next book.I guess the other thing that has me waffling over rounding down to 3 stars is the tense issues...I'm not used to 3rd person, and it felt really confusing sometimes. I mean, I can't figure out if it's just b/c I personally don't like it, or if it was genuinely confusing and could have been cleaned up?? Weird...
ON REREAD: Still 3.5 stars -- Knowing this is a serial novella series, I was prepared for the cliffy ending. I'm not sure if this one has been updated and stupid Amazon just never sent me the updated files, but if it hasn't been updated: beware there is a horrific amount of tense changes (past/present). I was more easily able to get through the weird first person for Mari chapters, third person for Trystan chapters. Maybe I'm a different reader than I was back then?
In the end I was sucked in by the mega emotions of both Mari and Trystan, particularly Trystan's love for Mari. It does feel a bit drawn out, but I'm willing to live with it because I liked the meat that we did get...even if I wished there was less bread. You know, just being weird and using a strange metaphor.

I really enjoyed this YA Romance by H.M. Ward. It had some romance, dealt with raw, emotional issues and drew me into the character from very early on. Collide is told in altering points of view, switching between Trystan and Mari which worked really well. As the reader I knew they had similar feelings for each other but both had their reasons for not pushing forward with those feelings. It helped me to relate to the characters and their storyline.
I fell in love with Trystan's character right away. He has swagger, a little bit of an edge that made him the type of swoon-worthy guy we all fall in love with. He comes off as a womanizing, trouble-maker but what others do not see is the incredibly talented musician who has gone through some very tough times at home. I couldn't help but feel for him; he has so much potential and raw talent but very few people in his life to nurture it.
Mari is different from other girls. She isn't part of the Let's-Follow-Trystan-Around Club and she sees a side of him that few get to see when she is helping him with his lines for the school play. Mari is more reserved than Trystan. She lives a life on the straight and narrow but she doesn't seem to be quite the good two shoes that Trystan thinks she is! Mari came off as a genuinely caring person and I think she is exactly what Trystan needs in his life after everything he has been through.
The more I got to know these two, the more I was convinced that they were perfect for each other. For some reason, bad boys were made to be tamed by good girls and good girls were made to tame bad boys. Trystan needs someone who sees him as more than a sexy accessory and Mari is the one girl who sees him as more than a sexy bed mate. There are so many walls that have to come down to make this happen and I am hoping the hammer is swinging in volume two!
Since The Secret Life of Trystan Scott is broken into volumes, each book will probably end with a bit of a cliffhanger (H.M. Ward writes as Ella Steele also and this is how the Secrets Series has been). I will say that this particular book ended just as things were getting good, I mean REAL good! It had come to a climax and I was getting so excited because something BIG was about to happen and then it was OVER! Don't get me wrong, it builds up anticipation for the next book but I would so love to devour this as one book rather than volumes. I want more, more, more and I want it now!
I am in love with Trystan Scott. What a great, complex character. He reminded me of Jordan Catalano (My So Called Life), except hotter and kinder. The relationship between the hero and heroine was also very well-done. I thought the author did a good job showing how each of them repressed their feelings and had no clue how the other felt. I thought the play within a play element was also well done. Trystan's emo song was incredibly cheesy, but because the story was so well done, I was willing to go along with all the cheesiness. I also like how the author is taking her time to build up the sexual tension instead of having them go at it like rabbits from the beginning. I just finished the second book, and all they've done so far is kiss. Taking things slow like this really builds up the energy, so that when they finally consummate their relationship it is going to be super satisfying -- or so I hope! I really sympathized with Trystan. He is the victim of truly horrible abuse, yet he is too proud to seek help -- frustrating, but also in keeping with his secretly noble character. Also of note is Trystan's best friend/ antagonist. An interesting, unlikeable character. I am trying to puzzle him out. Is he secretly in love with Trystan but unable to deal with it? I hope he doesn't hurt the heroine! And I hope the father gets his comeuppance!
Very glad this isn't my first HM Ward book. I was surprised at the number of typos in this book, that's not something I've experienced from this author but this book is a bit older so perhaps that's why. There also seemed to be problems with the point of view. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but sometimes I wasn't sure if the character was talking about themselves or not. I'm not a huge fan of Young Adult books but made it through this one. The story about Trystan and his singing was the part that kept me interested. Then, a cliffhanger ending. I hate those. I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series or just go back to the other one I'm in the middle of.
