Star-crossed lovers courting doom in the Caribbean. An atrophied author cutting backdoor deals with nihilism. And "... rum, rum, rum. Buckets and barrels and gallons of rum."

A Fool for Lesser Things follows six friends from Wisconsin as they test their Midwestern constitutions in an idyllic tropical paradise, letting the mundane drama of their lives play out against the breathtaking backdrop of Grand Cayman Island.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'A Fool for Lesser Things'. Read it and see how the 'lesser things' can so easily lead us astray. It does so in varying degrees for the six characters (3 couples) in this story. Juan's passage through ego is a harrowing, compelling, tragicomic journey, and we never quite understand what he most wants, and regrets. We've all experienced elements of the descent he brings on himself, his story seems familiar, yet it's been years since I read such a well-drawn portrait. Reminiscent of the Consul in 'Under the Volcano', Juan is a master at evasion and self-justification, yet no one condemns him more than himself.

The dialogue crackles, and works in counterpoint to one deftly-narrated action after another. There are several 'events' in the story which I believe occurred, but which I realize now were convincingly implied. They exist fully-formed in my reading, and such suggestion by the author is among the more difficult achievements in storytelling. Moreover, no event is 100% nailed down as to why it happened, how it affected those concerned, or what they intended.

The narrative voice keeps us slightly within Juan's orbit (this is 'his' world and story), yet our sympathies flow unimpeded towards his wife, Anna. There are hints too at the vagaries and indignities of artistic production, as two of the six characters have careers in the arts, another of life's lesser things. Nothing is spared scrutiny, yet nothing is outright reviled. I had forgotten how enjoyable a character-driven story could be. 'A Fool for Lesser Things' delivers on all counts.

A Fool for Lesser Things edition by Ted Prokash Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A Fool for Lesser Things by Ted Prokash is an excellent read with a captivating story line and believable characters. I can't wait to read the next one. Great read. Recommended!
I enjoyed reading this book since I am from the Midwest and could relate to some of the content and characters. I read that this is this author's first book, and I think that with his writing style and storytelling abilities, we will be seeing much more from him in the future. I purchased his next book on and look forward to reading it. My only reason for not giving him that 5th star is because some of the verbage is a little bit beyond my familiar vocabulary repertoire. But, that's not a bad thing.........Looking things up in the dictionary once in a while helped me expand that vocabulary. My friends are impressed!! Well done, Mr. Prokash!
A Fool For Lesser Things is a novel about three couples vacationing in the Caribbean, Grand Cayman Island, specifically, but it is about much more than that - it is an unapologetic view of what happens when deep introspection, ego, and choices (good and bad), clash on the shore of these people's lives. The protagonist, Juan, is a writer caught up in the throes of cynical life-searching, doubting/examining all decisions he has made up to the point this story takes place, including his marriage. His friends, the other characters in the book, also have their own inner-struggles and searches, albeit without the fierce intellect and deep inward eye of Juan. The result is a novel that is both desperate and comical, weary and life-affirming, and sexually frank. The dialogue is scintillating and realistic and the characters' relationships are complex, mature and incredibly fleshed-out.
Debauchery exists side by side with stark beauty as does love and hate and everything in-between, reminding one of something F. Scott Fitzgerald may have written, especially the novel "Tender Is The Night". It is also a very entertaining novel that catalogues the wild nights that most young people would experience with the backdrop of any Caribbean Island, and it is not bogged down with over-exposure or over-intellectualization, though it is a very intelligent piece.
I applaud Ted Prokash - I thoroughly enjoyed this work and count it as one of my favorite reads in recent years. 5 enthusiastic stars!

Tony Nesca - Author of "About A Girl" and "The Do-Nothing Boys" and co-editor of the underground publishing venture Screamin' Skull Press -
Three couples, six people, vacation on a Caribbean island. Each person and each couple is dysfunctional. No one is likable. There is no plot, just these sorry excuses for people stumbling through booze, drugs, and disagreements. One character is a writer who sold one book and made a lot of money. Three chapters from his novel are tossed in, one at a time. They are vulgar and disgusting, nothing sexy about the activities described. If you waste your time or money on this novel, the title will apply to you.
