The School-to-Prison Pipeline, characterized by hyper- punitive zero-tolerance policies and a criminalized educational environment, has been a constant topic of discourse over the past decade. The power of perception has led to racially biased disciplinary policies in schools, which primarily target black male youth. The toll that the school-to-prison pipeline has taken on the African American community has been devastating. However, with so much attention given to the front end of this crisis there is scant attention paid to the back end. In other words, if we acknowledge the reality of this pipeline, which is manifested in mass incarceration, shouldn’t we now also be focusing on the victims of this draconian process?

The purpose of this book is to discuss the development of four social-services programs that engage the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated population. The discussion of the anatomy of these four programs should give the reader an understanding of what it takes to create and sustain a nonprofit organization that helps reintegrate those entangled in the criminal justice system back into society.

There are minefields for great ideas. For instance, at dinner parties there are always people connecting and discussing wonderful ideas for bettering their communities. They become energized by the possibilities of partnering with others who are like-minded. But, few of these ideas materialize. And, the ones that do materialize face an uphill battle to becoming implemented.

There are countless people who energetically discuss ideas that would make their communities better. The first obstacle to developing a program is will and energy. It is easy to have an idea but is more difficult to have the will and energy to develop the idea into a functioning program. Time is also a factor. Many people do not have the time to commit to developing a program. If they are students, classes are their priority. If they are professionals, careers are their priority. If they have a family, family is their priority. Money is also a barrier. Most people cannot afford to spend time developing a program if they are not getting paid. Those who do have the will and energy, time, independence, and money to create an impactful program, have to navigate endless roadblocks in order to thrive and to be successful.

This book is about creating a new pipeline, not a new system. The systems are already in place—durable and calcified. They have stood the test of time. The question now is how to create new networks that will energize systems and optimize outcomes for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.

The prison-to-school pipeline takes this marginalized population and tries to empower them with education. The critique of the school-to-prison pipeline examines the problem. This new pipeline creates back-end solutions to a decade-old problem.
